Named after the village of ytterby — the rare earth in red television phosphors, laser garnets, and superconductors.
Yttrium was isolated from a single quarry in Ytterby, Sweden, which also yielded terbium, erbium, and ytterbium — all named for the same village. Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) crystals power solid-state lasers. Yttrium-barium-copper oxide was an early high-temperature superconductor.
