Ibrahima Konaté, Liverpool | Age 27 | 27 caps — The Third Option Who Starts Half the Games. Konaté's cap count understates his value. He is France's emergency starter who's good enough to be another team's first choice. This board runs three deep at center-back. That is not normal.

Jules Koundé, Barcelona | Age 27 | 46 caps — The Hybrid Cornerback. Koundé can play right-back, center-back, or, if necessary, a position that hasn't been invented yet. He's Barcelona's Swiss Army knife. Deschamps picked him for exactly that flexibility.

Theo Hernandez, Al-Hilal | Age 28 | 42 caps — The Saudi League Gamble. The room gets a little quiet when this pick is read. Theo left AC Milan for the Saudi Pro League in 2025 and scouts spent the next six months arguing about whether that mattered. Deschamps decided it doesn't. The left flank is his.

Lucas Hernandez, PSG | Age 30 | 41 caps — The Brother Who Never Gets Enough Credit. Lucas and Theo both on the same roster. The Hernandez brothers are both here. One covering every minute of the left side between them. This never stops being remarkable.

Malo Gusto, Chelsea | Age 23 | 9 caps — The Ascending Right-Back. At 23, Gusto is the youngest defender on the board. Chelsea right-back with upside. Picked ahead of several older veterans. No complaints on the analysis desk.

Maxence Lacroix, Crystal Palace | Age 26 | 2 caps — The Camavinga Trade. Here's the pick that people will debate for months. Deschamps chose an extra defender — Lacroix, 26, 2 caps, Crystal Palace — over Eduardo Camavinga, who can play both midfield and left-back. Is it conservative? Yes. Is Deschamps allowed to be conservative after two World Cup finals? Also yes.1

Midfielders (Round 4–5, Picks 4a–4e)

N'Golo Kanté, Fenerbahçe | Age 35 | 67 caps — The Unretirement. The crowd goes genuinely wild. Kanté is 35 and plays in Turkey and everyone on this panel lost him two years ago, and now he's walking up to shake Deschamps' hand in what amounts to a standing ovation from an analyst desk.

Kanté does not smile. Kanté has never smiled on television. But if he did, this would be the moment.2

Aurélien Tchouaméni, Real Madrid | Age 26 | 44 caps — The Anchor. Tchouaméni is the engine. He does not get Ballon d'Or votes. He does not post training clips with captions in three languages. He plays 90 minutes and wins every second ball and the team functions. That is the job.

Adrien Rabiot, AC Milan | Age 31 | 57 caps — The Consistent Veteran Mid. 57 caps. That's not an accident. Deschamps has called Rabiot up in every major window since 2019. He believes in Rabiot when the mainstream doesn't. This year Rabiot played well at Milan. The decision was easy.

Manu Koné, Roma | Age 25 | 12 caps — The Young Complementary Pick. Serie A's best-kept secret at defensive midfield. Koné was barely discussed in pre-draft coverage, which is exactly the type of pick that looks obvious in hindsight three weeks into the tournament.

Warren Zaïre-Emery, PSG | Age 20 | 10 caps — The Kid. Twenty years old. Ten caps. Playing for PSG in Champions League nights like it's a Tuesday afternoon training session. Deschamps has been easing him in since 2023. This is the "potential to be a cornerstone of the next decade" pick. There is always one.1

Forwards (Round 1–2, Picks 1b–1k)

Kylian Mbappé, Real Madrid | Age 27 | 96 caps — The Consensus #1 Overall. There is no debate here. Mbappé is the franchise player, the face of the operation, the reason the opponent spends Thursday and Friday in film study just for him. He scored a hat-trick in a World Cup final at 23. He needs five goals to become France's all-time leading scorer (Giroud, 57). He is on the podium before Deschamps finishes the sentence.

France is in Group I. They open June 16 vs. Senegal at MetLife Stadium. Mbappé will have at least three games to close that gap.3

Ousmane Dembélé, PSG | Age 29 | 58 caps — The Ballon d'Or on the Bench. Dembélé won the Ballon d'Or in 2025. He is listed here as a "forward" but effectively occupies a role of his own design: right side, left side, center chaos. He and Mbappé together is not a fair fight for the defense.3

Marcus Thuram, Inter Milan | Age 28 | 33 caps — The Physical Presence. Thuram Jr. is the forward who does the work Mbappé and Dembélé don't have to do. Strong in the air, holds the ball up, presses from the front. Draft grades: quietly high. Randal Kolo Muani, who famously had a shot saved by Emi Martínez in the 2022 final to deny France the trophy, was left off this board entirely. Thuram made it. Kolo Muani did not.1

Michael Olise, Bayern Munich | Age 24 | 15 caps — The Breakout Candidate. Olise left Crystal Palace for Bayern in 2024 and immediately became one of the most electric wingers in Europe. A disappointing Champions League semifinal exit won't erase the body of work. This is the pick that scouts want to claim they flagged early.2

Rayan Cherki, Manchester City | Age 22 | 5 caps — The Wildcard. Five caps. Barely played for France. Lit up the Premier League in moments. The talent evaluation community is split. Half the room thinks this is genius; the other half thinks Deschamps is sentimental about Lyon alumni. The fact that Cherki can do things nobody else on this board can do probably settles it.1

Bradley Barcola, PSG | Age 23 | 18 caps — The Depth Winger. Barcola has gone from promising academy product to Champions League regular in eighteen months. He is on this roster because he's become hard to leave off it, which is about the nicest thing you can say about a 23-year-old depth pick.

Désir Doué, PSG | Age 21 | 6 caps — The Youth Movement Continues. PSG has three players on this board aged 21 or under. Doué is the most raw, but Deschamps has always valued potential in a 26-man roster that gives him room to carry it.

Maghnes Akliouche, Monaco | Age 24 | 7 caps — The Ligue 1 Loyalty Pick. In an era when the entire France squad plays in England, Germany, Italy, or Spain, Akliouche is the sole standard-bearer for Ligue 1. Monaco has had a strong season. He earned it.

Jean-Philippe Mateta, Crystal Palace | Age 28 | 3 caps — The Late Riser. Three caps sounds low for a 28-year-old with his goal record at Crystal Palace. It is low. But Deschamps needed a striker who could play a different role to Thuram, and Mateta fits the profile. He'll probably be the last man called if the squad needs goals off the bench in a knockout game.

Undrafted free agents

The following players were not selected. Their agents have been notified.

Eduardo Camavinga, Real Madrid — The most debated omission. Can play multiple positions, Real Madrid pedigree, 24 years old. The only explanation that holds is Deschamps wanted an extra specialist defender over a midfielder who can play defense. It stings.
Randal Kolo Muani, PSG/on loan — Still carrying the ghost of that saved shot in the Qatar final. He didn't make the board.
Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool — Out with a ruptured Achilles tendon. The injury ended what was turning into a fine debut season in England. At 23, there will be more drafts.
Lucas Chevalier — PSG transfer didn't pay off in performance this year. Numbers didn't warrant inclusion.1

Retired jersey

🎗️ Antoine Griezmann — Number Voluntarily Surrendered. Griezmann retired from international football before this draft cycle. 137 caps. 44 goals. Two finals. A swan song at the 2024 Euros.
