[0:15] Welcome to The Full Time Report. I'm Tom. It is Wednesday the 29th of April 2026, and we have an absolute packed show for you this morning.
[0:24] PSG beat Bayern Munich five-four at the Parc des Princes. That is the highest-scoring Champions League semi-final match in the competition's history — jointly with Rangers six, Frankfurt three back in 1960. So yeah. Historic.
[0:37] And then tonight, Arsenal head to Madrid to face Atlético in the other semi-final first leg. We'll get into the team news, the stakes, and why this one could actually be quite different to the Paris carnage.
[0:48] Plus the transfer round-up — Salah's next club incoming, Chelsea are still trying to find a manager, and there's actually some good news for Manchester United fans. Kobbie Mainoo is staying.
[0:58] Right. Let's get into it. PSG versus Bayern Munich. Five-four. I'm going to walk you through this match because every single goal deserves a mention.
[1:07] Bayern actually got the first goal. Harry Kane, seventeenth minute, penalty. Sets the tone for a match that was never, at any point, calm.

[1:41] So it's two-two going into stoppage time. And then the first of two big VAR moments. Dembélé goes down in the box. The initial call was no penalty — but VAR reviewed it and awarded it. Dembélé stepped up himself and converted. Two-three PSG at half-time.
[1:57] The controversy? Kompany was livid afterwards. He said — and I'm quoting him directly here — «I think the penalty was highly debatable. From what I saw, the ball hit the body first and then the arm.» And honestly, watching the replays, he's got a point. The ball seemed to hit Alphonso Davies' leg before the arm, so you can see why Bayern were furious.
[2:18] Second half was equally bonkers. Kvaratskhelia bags his second on fifty-six. Then Dembélé again on fifty-eight. PSG are five-two up. At this point you'd think it's done.
[2:30] But Bayern just kept coming. Upamecano — yes, their own centre-back — scores on sixty-five. Five-three. Then Luis Díaz on sixty-eight.
[2:39] And Díaz's goal was the second VAR incident of the night. Initially flagged offside. But VAR overturned it, confirmed the goal. Five-four. Paris must have been absolutely sweating.
[2:51] PSG held on. One-goal lead into the second leg at the Allianz Arena. Which, as Kompany pointed out, is not nothing. Bayern have won eighteen of their last twenty-one home knockout games in Europe.
[3:04] The managers' reactions were brilliant. Luis Enrique called it — and I think this is fair — «without doubt the best match I have ever coached in fifteen years of management.» That is some statement.
[3:15] Kompany though — and this is why I'm already backing Bayern for the second leg — he didn't sound like a manager beaten. He said: «We scored four away from home in a Champions League semi-final, and that normally ends the tie. The belief is a hundred percent there.»
[3:29] And Kimmich, the Bayern midfielder, made a brilliant point post-match — he said near the end, Paris looked tired, they had cramps, they were playing for time. Bayern felt they were close to an equaliser. If that second leg at the Allianz is anything like the first, we are in for a treat.
[3:46] One brilliant stat from the match: Harry Kane became the first English player to score in six consecutive Champions League matches, surpassing Steven Gerrard's run of five. That almost got lost in everything else.
[3:57] And there's this fascinating footnote — Manuel Neuer, one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, didn't make a single save in the match. Now that isn't necessarily a Neuer criticism — Carragher made the point well — the attacking quality from both sides was just absurdly high. Every forward was at an eight or nine out of ten.
[4:15] Thierry Henry nailed it when he said: «Today we saw proper attacking football from both sides. Everyone complains football is boring — this was anything but boring.» Hard to argue.
[4:25] The thing that struck me, and I've seen this in the Reddit discussions too — there's a genuine question being asked this morning: should this have been the final? Two of the best attacking teams in Europe, and they're meeting in the semis. It does feel a little cruel.
[4:38] There's also a broader point in here — and I think it's worth saying — PSG and Bayern showed something that European-level football is producing right now that the Premier League sides just haven't matched this season. No English clubs in the last four. That should give us pause.
[4:53] Right. Staying in the Champions League, but moving forward to tonight.
[4:57] Arsenal fly into Madrid for the first leg against Atlético at the Wanda Metropolitano. Eight o'clock local time, seven o'clock if you're in the UK. This one could hardly be more different in style to what we saw in Paris.
[5:07] Atlético at home in European semi-finals have not lost in their last six matches. Three wins, three draws. They are a fortress. Simeone has built something almost unique — a team that, regardless of the quality of opponent, just refuses to concede ground at the Metropolitano.
[5:26] Arsenal's team news: Kai Havertz is out — he picked up a muscle injury against Newcastle. Jurrien Timber is out with an ankle problem. Mikel Merino is also unavailable. Three important players missing for the first leg.
[5:38] The good news: Bukayo Saka came through the Newcastle match unscathed and should start. Viktor Gyokeres is expected to lead the attack in Havertz's absence. And Eberechi Eze and Riccardo Calafiori are both back in the squad — potentially important options off the bench.
[5:55] There's a slight doubt over Martin Zubimendi — he's been carrying an illness — but the expectation is he'll play. Arteta's predicted line-up looks something like: Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Hincapie; Odegaard, Zubimendi, Rice; Saka, Gyokeres, Martinelli.
[6:12] For Atlético, Pablo Barrios is confirmed out with a hamstring. Ademola Lookman is almost certainly not going to start — he's had three muscle injuries in three months, which is a remarkable streak of bad luck. David Hancko and Jose Gimenez are also doubtful.
[6:28] A couple of key numbers to hold in mind. Arsenal beat Atlético four-nil in the league phase back in October. But as everyone knows, European knockout football — especially at the Metropolitano — is a completely different animal.
[6:40] Arsenal's back three of Raya, Saliba and Gabriel have now played twenty-two Champions League matches together and conceded just eleven goals in that time, keeping thirteen clean sheets. That is an extraordinary defensive record at this level.
[6:54] Arteta was brilliant in his press conference. He said: «This is the status we want. We have earned it through incredible work, passion and quality. Now is the moment to make a statement.» You genuinely get the sense he believes this team is ready.
[7:07] Odegaard was asked about this being Arsenal's chance to reach their first Champions League final since 2006. He said: «We're in a great position to make history. I've seen the progression at this club — it's been amazing to be a part of. We want to take that last step.» Twenty years is a long time to wait.
[7:24] My honest take? Arsenal have the defensive solidity to handle whatever Simeone sets up. But Atlético at home, under pressure, with Griezmann and Julián Álvarez — they are dangerous. I'd back a tight, tense, low-scoring affair tonight. A one-nil or nil-nil would be fine for Arsenal.

[8:44] Genuinely brilliant news for United. He is twenty years old, came through their academy, already a senior England international. In a season of very little to celebrate at Old Trafford, keeping Mainoo is a real win.
[8:57] Chelsea and the manager search. We're now a week on from Liam Rosenior being sacked after just three months in the job — that's four managers in about eighteen months, by the way — and Chelsea's shortlist has been confirmed.
[9:08] The three main candidates: Marco Silva, who is out of contract at Fulham this summer. Andoni Iraola, who confirmed last month he's leaving Bournemouth at the end of the season. And Xabi Alonso, who has been available since leaving Real Madrid in January.
[9:21] Chelsea say they're not rushing the appointment and want a robust process. I mean — fair enough given recent history. But there's a Sky Sports analyst who made a pointed observation: «I'm not sure Chelsea actually want a manager — they have full control.» Which says everything about how that club is run right now.
[9:37] If I'm picking from those three? Iraola has done something genuinely impressive at Bournemouth with a fraction of Chelsea's resources. Xabi Alonso is the glamour appointment. Silva is the safe, proven Premier League option. I could see it going any way.
[9:53] One more from the transfer front — Fabrizio Romano reported this morning that Danilho Doekhi, the Union Berlin centre-back, is leaving on a free. Leeds United and Borussia Dortmund are keen, and there's Saudi interest too. Worth watching if you're a Leeds fan.
[10:07] And there's a bit of a subplot at Real Madrid — Ornstein reporting that Florentino Perez wants Jose Mourinho as the next manager. Support inside the board is apparently divided, but Perez is the one driving it. That would be some return to the Bernabeu.

[10:26] Salah we've covered. The other major Liverpool update is Alisson — he's been out seven matches with a hamstring issue and is expected back around the third of May, which would be that Manchester United clash. Interesting timing.
[10:37] Arsenal heading into tonight with Havertz, Timber and Merino all confirmed out. Calafiori is fifty-fifty, Zubimendi is touch and go with that illness. Not ideal going into a European semi-final.
[10:50] Spurs continue to have an injury crisis that borders on the comical. Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, Cristian Romero — all out, most for a long time. Vicario and Solanke are both doubtful for this week. De Zerbi has about eleven fit outfield players.
[11:09] At Manchester City, Ruben Dias is out indefinitely with a thigh problem — no return date — and Gvardiol is out until at least the ninth of May. City still have the title race to navigate with a fixture pile-up coming in May. Four games in eleven days. That's going to be brutal.
[11:23] A few others worth flagging quickly: Jarrad Branthwaite is out for the rest of the season for Everton. Jack Grealish too — ankle surgery, done for the year. And Callum Hudson-Odoi at Nottingham Forest won't be back until July.
